First, remove the factory-installed stereo. This will require different methods depending on how the sound system was installed, and may require the removal of spring clips and/or bolts. Once you’ve removed the front panel, unplug the stereo from its plastic wiring harness and unplug the antenna to completely remove the whole thing.
Second, prep the new stereo for installation. Several companies, such as Crutchfield Inc., offer custom wiring harnesses to make life easier for amateur techie; simply connect the new stereo to the harness, fit the harness into the old stereo’s plug, and voila! You’ve succeeded.
To complete the installation, install the mounting kit that came with your new stereo and plug in the antenna cable. Make sure to test the knobs, dials, and reception to ensure that all the wiring works properly before you bolt it into place, as this will save you the trouble of trying to disassemble everything later to fix a mistake.
